The Highlands & Islands Music & Dance Festival 2015

As well as offering some of the most incredible natural scenery in the world, Scotland can also boast a rich cultural heritage that is great fun to explore. A wonderful way to do that is by taking in the Highlands & Islands Music and Dance Festival which will run from the 1st to the 3rd of May 2015.

The Highlands & Islands Music & Dance Festival 2015

Set at various locations across Oban, the Highlands & Islands Music & Dance Festival showcases the best in traditional Scottish music and dance as well as celebrating Scotland’s multicultural background.

The West Coast town of Oban is known for being particularly popular with tourists who come to enjoy the dramatic scenery and beautiful bay that is protected by the island of Kerrera. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’ you can get ferries out to the islands of Tiree, Coll, Islay and Lismore as well as Barra and South Uist.

The festival is a great introduction to tourist season as Oban braces itself for the annual influx of visitors. The festival has expanded over the years to know feature 125 competition classes across ten disciplines. Over 1100 participants will compete in everything from piping and the fiddle to highland dancing and the choreography which makes it so impressive.

It is a wonderful opportunity for anyone visiting the country to get a better idea of traditional Scottish arts as well as being great for the people of Scotland to get back to their roots and do what they do best, Party!

Starting in 1984, the idea was to encourage the participation of young musicians and dancers in Scotland and to help them develop the skills to carry on the fine tradition of Highland music and dance. With a festival parade through Oban the festival is very inclusive and is a great way to sample some traditional Scottish Culture.
