Explore historic Rothesay Castle

Hop off at stop 1 and discover the ruins of Rothesay Castle, once the Isle of Bute’s key defence against Viking forces. Dating back to the 1200s, the castle was built by the Stewart family with an immense circular curtain wall and four round watchtowers.

It played an important role in the Scottish Wars of Independence and the English Civil War, having been occupied by both Robert the Bruce and Oliver Cromwell’s forces.

Discover the grandeur of Mount Stuart

Hop off at stop 6 to see the impressive neo-Gothic mansion, Mount Stuart. Built in 1877, it was one of the most technologically advanced homes of its time, being the first home in Scotland to be lit by electricity and reportedly the first home ever to have an indoor heated swimming pool. It was built as home for the Stuarts, Marquesses of Bute and descendants of Robert the Bruce.

In 2016, a genuine Shakespeare First Folio was discovered in the library. Soak up the grandeur of this historic mansion and then relax in its stunning grounds and gardens.
